It’s pretty straightforward, and this guide walks you through it for both Android phones and iPhones. Keep reading to clean up your contact list.

Delete a contact on Android

Removing a WhatsApp contact on an Android device means taking them out of your phone’s main address book. WhatsApp simply mirrors what’s there.

Here’s the usual way to do it:

1. Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
2. Tap the new chat icon (usually a speech bubble) at the bottom right.
3. Find the contact you want to remove. Tap on their name.
4. In the chat screen that opens, tap their name again at the top.
5. Tap the three vertical dots (menu icon) in the top right corner.
6. Choose View in address book. This opens the contact in your phone’s Contacts app.
7. Tap the menu icon again (might be three dots or say ‘More’) and select Delete.

Delete a contact on iPhone

3. Tap the new chat icon (looks like a square with a pencil) in the top right corner.

Why you might not be able to delete a contact

  • Solution: You need to find where the contact originally came from. Open the contact in your phone’s address book and look for details about which account it’s linked to. You’ll likely need to log into that account (e.g., Google Contacts on the web) and delete the contact from there.
• Existing Chat: Even after deleting the contact, the chat history with their number will still exist in your Chats tab. This might make you think the contact wasn’t deleted. Deleting the contact and deleting the chat are two separate actions.

If a contact simply won’t disappear from WhatsApp after trying these steps, check your phone’s main Contacts app carefully.
